IPC Academy
The IPC Academy
The IPC has recognised the need to provide educational opportunities for all individuals working within the Paralympic Movement, and has partnered with the World Academy of Sport to create the IPC Academy.
The IPC Academy is the Education Partner of the IPC working together to improve educational standards within sport throughout the Paralympic Movement and ensuring that executives, administrators and officials have an educational centre that is sensitive to their needs and in touch with trends and developments. Most importantly the IPC Academy provides world class programmes.
The IPC Academy has a focused team continually enhancing programmes to ensure they remain world leading and specific to the Paralympic family's needs. There are a number of programmes offered by the IPC Academy including:
• Paralympic Games-Related Programmes & Activities
• Leadership & Management Programmes & Activities
• IF Programmes & Activities
• Other Programmes & Activities
Paralympic Games-Related Programmes & Activities
Paralympic Games related programmes use the Paralympic Games as a platform to showcase such a prominent global sports event and to bring people together to be inspired by it through education. Audiences may include both specific target groups (e.g. event organizers) and the general public. The programmes and projects may be delivered both prior to and during the Paralympic Games and include:
• Excellence Programmes for both Sochi 2014 and Rio 2016 organising committees
• Sochi 2014 Volunteer Training
• IPC Academy Inclusion Summit
Leadership & Management Programmes & Activities
Programmes of this category serve to build excellence and capacity for a variety of audiences: executives, management staff and board members of NPCs and other sports organizations, Chef de Missions, volunteers, athletes, etc. They cover a wide range of topics mostly in the area of governance and administration (including, e.g. marketing, media, development, presentation skills, athlete representation, IPC structure, vision and mission, history of the Paralympic Movement, etc) and pursue the idea of professional development and lifelong learning. To date there have been a number of such programmes delivered and the IPC Academy is happy to work with partners in developing specific programmes to address local, regional and global needs.
IF Programmes & Activities
IF sport programmes address the need for a (re)certification process to ensure global standardized levels of competence amongst Technical Officials and Classifiers (in the future also Coaches) of Paralympic sports from the basic level of knowledge and competence through to an international level certification. The pathways to becoming an International Technical Official or International Classifier comprise three different stages. Topics cover IF responsibilities relating to sport rules and regulations and how these are applied in practice. The programmes follow the train-the-trainer methodology and are delivered via a mixture of distance (online) and on-site programmes.
Current online programmes for IPC Athletics Technical Officials and IPC Swimming Classification can be accessed here. For on-site programmes a complete list can be found via the appropriate sport page:
Other Programmes & Activities
The IPC Academy also offers other activities in order to create engagement throughout the Movement. A Speaker Series has been hosted at World Academy of Sport education partner, Royal Holloway, University of London in the lead up to the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
