Maria Del Carmen Herrera Gomez of Spain celebrates winning the -70kg final with her coach and Spanish team leader, Vicente Arolas Roman at the London 2012 Paralympic Games

Born with albinism, Spain’s Carmen Herrera Gomez began competing in various sports from a young age, and finding fondness of the judoka judogi (uniform), she began competing in judo.

Intrigued by the will vs. will aspect of judo, Herrera Gomez takes pride in representing herself and her country.

No stranger to adversity, Herrera Gomez had a long recovery in 2009 after suffering a serious knee injury.

She came back stronger and with a will to win in 2010 with a silver medal at the IBSA World Championships.

Herrera Gomez created history at the London 2012 Paralympic Games by becoming the first Spanish judoka to win three gold medals in three consecutive Paralympics, remaining the only woman to win the -70kg event at the Paralympic Games.

Herrera Gomez likes to live in the moment, and doesn’t like to look too far into the future, saying she embodies training and eating right.

Already an accomplished judoka, Herrera Gomez now looks to continue her form on her road to Rio 2016.
