At age 41, Jose Macedo is as experienced as they come with regards to the sport of boccia, and the veteran is showing no signs of slowing down.

Born in Braga, Portugal, Macedo, who has cerebral palsy, has been ever present since his winning of two gold medals in his Paralympic Games debut at Atlanta 1996.

He retained his individual BC3 Paralympic title at Sydney 2000, when he overcame fellow countryman Armando Costa in the final.

From that day on, Macedo picked up various medals at European and World Championships, but failed to make the same impact on the Paralympic stage, as he did not make the podium at Athens 2004 nor Beijing 2008.

However, at London 2012, the SC Braga member reasserted himself as a Paralympic medal contender, as he won silver in the pairs BC3 event, and in the individual BC3 competition he stopped it from being a Korean sweep, as he defeated Han Soo Kim for the bronze medal.

Macedo improved his impressive medal tally at the 2013 Boccia European Championships in Portugal, by winning double gold, defeating Greek rival Greg Polychronidis in the individual BC3 final, and then overcoming him again in the pairs BC3 final, as Portugal were triumphant over Greece to win gold.

Teamed with coach Luis Marta, Macedo has shown throughout his career that he is a constant medal contender, and he has on eyes adding yet another Paralympic medal to his collection at Rio 2016.
