“Our aim is to create a world-class stage that will deliver a fantastic weekend of Championship racing, raising the profile of the sport while offering a unique experience to elite, age-group and novice participants.”
British Triathlon announced last week that they will hold the 2013 British Triathlon Championships in Liverpool from 13-14 July, and that they will include a para-triathlon category.
The organisation’s new championship event concept was created following recommendations from the 2011 British Triathlon Competition Review, which cited the need to raise the game of British Championships across all participant categories to make them aspirational events for people to take part in.
The new single-weekend event will include able-bodied and para-athletes, as well as youth and junior athletes.
Ian Braid, British Triathlon Director for Major and National Events said: “Our aim is to create a world-class stage that will deliver a fantastic weekend of Championship racing, raising the profile of the sport while offering a unique experience to elite, age-group and novice participants.”
Great Britain headlined the 2012 ITU Para-Triathlon World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand, leading the medals table with five golds.
Great Britain’s gold medallists in Auckland included Iain Dawson in the men’s TRI-6, Matthew Emmerson in the men’s TRI-5, Faye McClelland in the women’s TRI-4, Steven Judge in the men’s TRI-3, and Karen Darke in the women’s TRI-1.
Para-triathlon will make its Paralympic debut at the Rio 2016 Games.
