Three cities – Istanbul (Turkey), Tokyo (Japan) and Madrid (Spain) - have been shortlisted as Candidate Cities to host the 2020 Paralympic Games following the elimination of Applicant Cities Baku (Azerbaijan) and Doha (Qatar).

The three Candidate Cities will now prepare their Candidature File with an in-depth description of their Paralympic and Olympic Projects which needs to be submitted by 7 January 2013.

They will also prepare for the visit of the IOC Evaluation Commission who will make a detailed technical assessment of each candidature and publish a report in advance of the 2020 Briefing for IOC Members, including IPC President Sir Philip Craven, in July 2013.

The election of the Host City of the 2020 Games will take place on 7 September 2013 at the 125th IOC Session in Buenos Aires in Argentina.

Of the three Candidate Cities, only Tokyo has previously staged a Paralympic Games. In 1964 the Japanese capital staged the second Paralympic Games featuring 375 athletes from 21 countries.
