Eindhoven Hosts Ice Sledge Hockey B World Championships

The 2009 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey World Championships B Tournament is currently underway in the city of Eindhoven, The Netherlands. Five teams are competing in Eindhoven not only for the gold medal, but finalists will also participate in the qualification tournament for the Vancouver 2010 Paralympic Winter Games. The competing teams include Estonia, Great Britain, Poland, Sweden and The Netherlands.

In the first match of the tournament on 15 March, Great Britain beat the Netherlands 8-2. The second match of the day saw Sweden win against Poland 3-1. It took only 30 seconds before the Swedish team took the lead. Only three minutes were needed to increase the score to 3-0. During the second period, Poland succeeded in putting pressure on the Swedish defense, getting back in the game and scoring 3-1, but could not prevent the loss.

After beating Poland on the first day, the Swedish Ice Sledge Hockey Team continued their winning series by defeating Estonia on the second day of the World Champs B 3-1. In the second match of that day, Great Britain faced a serious defeat, losing 10-1 against Poland.

On day three, Estonia played the British team and took home the victory, winning 12-0. Poland beat the host team from The Netherlands 5-0.

After a rest day on 18 March, the tournament will continue until 21 March, when the finals are played in the Eindhoven’s Icestadium.
