Four archers will shoot for double gold during the finals round at the World Archery Para-Championships over the next two days in Bangkok, Thailand, following the individual elimination round on Tuesday (6 November).

The recurve men’s and women’s wheelchair (W2) and compound wheelchair (W1) divisions found gold medal contenders after the recurves started at the 1/16 stage and the compounds with their last 16.

Recurve women W2

Six matches took place in the 1/16 round, with the top 10-ranked archers receiving a bye into the 1/8 stage. In the last 16, the seeds started to fall.

Double-Paralympic champion Zahra Nemati was down 0-4 to Turkish archer Ozlem Kalay before recovering to win 6-4 in the quarter-finals. Nemati deserved an easier semi-finals match, and that’s what she got. With a 6-0 win over South Korea’s Mi-Hyang Lee, she booked herself a finals ticket.

China’s Yangong Xiao lost her first set since the 1/16 stage, but she fought back to take semi-final victory over Ukraine’s Iryna Volynets, 6-4. Asian archers Nemati and Xiao will now fight for gold.

Recurve men W2

Great Britain’s Paul Brown will compete against the host nation’s Hanreuchai Netsiri for gold in this event. In the semi-finals, the local archer defeated Bato Tsydendorzheiv 6-0, while Brown beat Taipei’s Lung Hui Tseng by a score of 6-2.

Compound men W1

An exciting final between the top two seeds – USA’s Jeff Fabry and Finland’s Jean-Pierre Antonios – is in store after both stormed through their semi-final rounds.

In an all-European bronze-medal match in this event, Czech archer David Drahoninsky won with a 12-point advantage over Great Britain’s John Cavanagh.

Compound women open

The two British favourites in the compound women’s open event, Danielle Brown and Mel Clarke, made it into the final four with comfortable wins, but Brown was the only one to move onto the finals.

Brown will shoot for gold against Turkey’s Burcu Dag, while Clarke settled for a bronze medal with a victory over Ukraine’s Larysa Mikhnieva.

Compound men open

Paralympic champion Jere Forsberg of Finland will face Great Britain’s John Stubbs in the final of this event, while Italy’s Gianpaolo defeated Switzerland’s Philippe Horner for bronze.

Recurve women standing

France’s Brigitte Duboc and China’s Qiurong Liang will battle for gold in the recurve women’s standing event, while Poland’s Milena Olszewska recorded a dominating 7-1 win over Thai archer Wasana Khuthawisap.

Russia’s double Paralympic champion Timur Tuchinov has so far been untouchable in this event, coasting through the quarter-final and semi-final rounds to set up a gold-medal matchup against Ukraine’s Yuriy Kopiy.

The Czech Republic’s Vaclav Kostal won bronze with a 6-0 victory over China’s Lixue Zhao.
