Mexico takes gold in women's -44kg and men's 75kg-82.5kg classes.
A sell-out and extremely vocal crowd was left in raptures on Friday (18 November) when Mexico won both Powerlifting events at the 2011 Parapan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
The first event, the women’s 44kg-60kg saw the hosts take both gold and silver. Amalia Perez lifted 132.0kg, equivalent to 130.08 points to take top spot. Her two successful lifts of 127.0kg and 132.0kg were both Games record for the -44kg class.
Silver medallist Laura Cerero broke the Games record three times with her set of lifts – 90.0kg, 95.0kg and 98.0kg - for the -60kg class. She finished on 111.32 points.
Bronze went to Venezuela’s Wiunawis Hernandez who lifted 86.0kg to score 97.15 points.
The Men’s 75kg-82.5kg class saw another Mexican victory.
Porfirio Arredondo scored 184.23 points with a lift of 190.0kg.
Subsequently, in the fourth round, which does not count towards the final medals scores, Arredondo went on to lift 193.0kg, a Games record for the -75kg class.
Silver went to Cuba’s Jesus Drake with 173.05 points following a 185.0kg lift which was a Games record for the -82.5kg class. Again, like Arredondo, Drake took a fourth lift and increased his record to 190.0kg, however this did not count towards his final result.
Brazil’s Luiz Carlos Novaes lifted 175.0kg to score 161.72 points.
There are two further Powerlifting events tomorrow (19 November).
This is the fourth edition of the Parapan American Games and has attracted 1,500 athletes from 24 countries who will compete in 13 different sports.
