Two more shooting gold medals will be awarded at the Royal Artillery Barracks, with mixed R5 10m air rifle SH2 and mixed R3 air rifle prone SH1 competitions taking place on day three of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
In the mixed R5 10m air rifle prone SH2, Korea’s Lee Jiseok won the gold medal at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games and is one of the favourites to win the competition at London 2012.
He is likely to receive a strong challenge from France’s Raphael Voltz and also from New Zealand’s Michael Johnson, who is ranked number two in the world.
Gorazd Francek Tirsek from Slovenia is another strong contender to be Paralympic champion. Tirsek holds both the qualifying and final score world records in this event.
This is the first of the SH2 classification events at the London 2012 Paralympic Games and will provide a good insight into the form of the shooters ahead of the rest of the SH2 events throughout the shooting programme.
Day three’s other event, the mixed R3 10m air rifle prone SH1, provides some shooters with a chance at redemption and others a chance to repeat their success from the first two days.
China has won both of the 10m air rifle SH1 events so far, with Zhang Cuiping winning the women's 10m air rifle standing SH1 and Dong Chao winning the men's 10m air rifle standing SH1.
Zhang and Dong were in tremendous form through the qualifying and the final of their events, with Zhang setting a world record and Dong scoring a Paralympic Games record.
They will both contest the mixed R3 10m air rifle prone SH1 competition.
For three Great Britain shooters, this event provides a chance to forget about the first few days of competition. Deanna Coates was the world number one ranked shooter in her first event but failed to make the final.
For Nathan Milgate and Matt Skelhon, it is a similar story, with both shooters not making it through qualifying in the men’s R1 10m air rifle standing SH1 competition, an event in which Milgate is world number one and Skelhon is world number three.
After missing the final in his first event, Skelhon said he needed to look forward to his next competition, the mixed R3 10m air rifle prone SH1.
"I've been medalling in international competitions in the last couple of years so I'm confident I can do fairly well,” he said.
Day three of the London 2012 Paralympic Games shooting competition is scheduled to commence at 09:00 at the Royal Artillery Barracks.
