Nigeria Tops Powerlifting as Commonwealth Games End

Para-athletes from Nigeria dominated the Powerlifting events this week at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India, winning all medals in the women’s as well as the men’s category.

For the women, Esther Osa Oyema came in first with a best lift of 148.1kg. Oyema was followed by Ganiyati Joy Onaolapo (139.3kg) and Osamwenyobor Arasomwan (124.6kg) respectively.

Yakunu Olaide Adesokan took first in the men’s category with a best lift of 215.1kg. Following Adesokan were compatriots Anthony Azunna Ulonnam (210.6kg) and Ikechukwu Obichukwu (196kg) respectively.

In the Table Tennis event, Nwaka Kate Oputa from Nigeria took the gold, adding more medals to her country’s final tally. Following Oputa were Australia’s Catherine Morrow and Nigeria’s Chinenye Faith Obiora respectively.

Taking place from 3-14 October, there were a total of 15 events for para-athletes at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. This included six in Swimming, six in Athletics, two in Powerlifting and one in Table Tennis which was only open to women.
