Successful IPC Anti-Doping Programme
24.04.2008
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) is proud to announce that there were no anti-doping rule violations during the 2007/2008 IPC Alpine and Nordic Skiing World Cups. A total of 66 in-competition doping tests were conducted in both sports during the winter season 2007-2008.
“The testing conducted during the World Cups was more comprehensive and the results for this winter season are a significant step in the right direction for the IPC. Athletes and National Paralympic Committees should be congratulated on their contribution to the IPC's Anti-Doping Programme,” said Dr. Peter Van de Vliet, IPC Medical & Scientific Director.
To improve its efforts in support of a doping free sport environment, IPC also signed an Out-of-Competition Testing Agreement with the Association of National Anti-Doping Organizations (ANADO). ANADO, through its network of National Anti-Doping Organizations will conduct up to 40 out of competition tests on athletes in IPC Sports from 2008 onwards. The programme is part of IPCs compliance requirements to the WADC.
“The agreement with ANADO allows IPC to implement a ‘smart’ testing programme as many National testing programmes are already conducted through the ANADO membership. With the limited resources available it was important for IPC to find a partner that could ensure complementary testing to the national programmes and the testing programme that the World Anti-Doping Agency does on behalf of IPC.”, said Dr. Van de Vliet
As a signatory of the World Anti-Doping Code (WADC), the IPC remains committed to a doping-free sporting environment at all levels. The IPC, together with the International Federations and the National Paralympic Committees, established the IPC Anti-Doping Code in January 2004 to prevent, in the spirit of fair play, doping in sport for athletes with a disability. The IPC Anti-Doping Code is in conformity with the general principles of the WADC. The IPC currently revises its Anti-Doping Code to be WADC compliant by 1 January 2009 when the revised WADC takes action.
