The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) would like to offer its condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Joan Scruton who passed away on 1 November 2007.
In her role as personal assistant of Sir Ludwig Guttmann and as a member of the Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury, Great Britain, from 1942 to 1968, she helped to ensure the foundation of the Paralympic Movement and the Paralympic Games.
With great commitment and dedication, she worked as Secretary General of the International Stoke Mandeville Wheelchair Sports Federation (ISMWSF) for several years. For her outstanding and long-lasting contributions to the Paralympic Movement, she received the Paralympic Order in 1999.
Joan was a respected member of the Paralympic Family and her spirit will live on in the coming generations of Paralympians.
