Hosted by the Hellenic Paralympic Committee, a total of 27 members (National Paralympic Committees, IPSFs and IOSDs) from all over Europe met from 14 to 15 September at the 7th European Paralympic Committee (EPC) General Assembly and Conference in Heraklion, Crete. The EPC Conference focused on the theme “Developing Young Paralympic Athletes in Europe”. Speakers from the European Commission, the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) Europe, the Asian Paralympic Committee and the Pan-Hellenic Women’s Sports Association outlined their programmes and projects to identify, recruit and retain young athletes with a disability. Furthermore, IPC Administrative Development Manager Bart Schell presented a summary of the Paralympic School Day Project and the delegates had the chance to participate in a round table discussion with the EPC Executive Board.

During the EPC General Assembly on Saturday, delegates discussed several topics including the election of a new Technical Officer, which will be Maria Laakso from Finland. Vienna, Austria, was elected as new host city of the EPC Headquarters. The election was made following strong bids from four candidate cities (Istanbul/Turkey, Lausanne/Switzerland, Rome/Italy and Vienna/Austria) and a close election process. Furthermore, the Beijing 2008 Organizing Committee (BOCOG), the Vancouver 2010 Organizing Committee (VANOC) and the London 2012 Organizing Committee (London 2012) presented a brief update on the status of each preparation progress to the delegates.
