Vote now for September’s Allianz Athlete of the Month

The public has until 12:00 (CEST) on Friday (10 October) to vote for their favourite via the IPC website.

September was another huge month of para-sport with four world and one European Championships taking place.

After some incredible performances across the board, the public now has the chance to vote for the Allianz Athlete of the Month for September 2014.

The nominees are as follows:

Yui Kamiji (JPN) and Jordanne Whiley (GBR), wheelchair tennis – the doubles pairing of Kamiji and Whiley won all four grand slam titles in 2014 –the first non-Dutch pairing to do so. This was capped by winning the US Open in September. Kamiji also won the singles title, her second of the year.

Leung Yuk Wing (HKG), boccia – A double gold medallist at Athens 2004, it took Yuk Wing a long time to get back to the top, but he achieved it with two gold medals at the 2014 BISFED Boccia World Championships. This included coming from three ends down in the individual final, before beating Paralympic champions Brazil in the BC4 Pairs.

Jamie Whitmore (USA), cycling – Whitmore won two more world titles at the 2014 Para-Cycling Road World Championships in Greenville, USA, making it six world titles combined in road and track cycling for the year.

Eduardo Avila Sanchez (MEX), judo – Sanchez scored the shock result of the 2014 IBSA Judo World Championships in Colorado Springs, USA, by beating Ukrainian Paralympic gold medallist Olexandr Kosinov in the -81kg category.

Richard Browne (USA), athletics – in one of the last meets of the season, Brown broke the men’s 200m T44 world record with a time of 21.62 at the Memorial Van Damme Diamond League meeting in Brussels, Belgium.

Galina Ryzkhova (RUS), wheelchair dance sport – Won three golds at the 2014 IPC Wheelchair Dance Sport Continents Cup in St. Petersburg Russia, in both the pairs, with partner Viacheslav Osipov, and the individual events (single ladies class 2 and single ladies freestyle class 2).

The public has until 12:00 (CEST) on Friday (10 October) to vote for their favourite via the IPC website.

The nominations are compiled from submissions by National Paralympic Committees (NPCs) and International Federations (IFs).
