Paralympic Media Awards Winners - 2005

Broadcast: The BBC was selected as the winner of the ‘Broadcast’ category for their outstanding coverage of the ATHENS 2004 Paralympic Games. The coverage presented by BBC included 13 live programmes, as well as studio-based broadcasts with guests and expert summarisers.

The features of the BBC broadcast coverage reflected both domestic and international Paralympians performing at the highest level, combined with the background stories of the athletes, easy to follow explanations of Paralympic-related information, such as classification, and interesting personal reflections made by both athletes and commentators.

The BBC’s coverage of the Paralympic Games was colourful, dynamic and full of passion for both the sport and in support of the British athletes. In addition to being well informed and knowledgeable about the sports, the presenters demonstrated a keen sense of educating their audience about different elements of the Paralympics and sharing their enthusiasm and experiences.

 

Daily Telegraph Logo

Written (Print): The Daily Telegraph has been committed to the coverage of the Paralympics and sport for persons with a disability and its issues for the last 15 years.

A team of two reporters, Gareth A. Davies and Robert Philip and one photographer, Russell Cheyne, attended the ATHENS 2004 Paralympic Games. Davies has been the correspondent on sport for athletes with a disability since 1995, having also attended the Atlanta 1996 Paralympic Games, and is widely considered to be an expert in the field. All three journalists have won national awards for their coverage or photographs of the Paralympic Games and sport for persons with a disability.

Throughout the ATHENS 2004 Paralympic Games, The Daily Telegraph covered the event with great diversity with an average of one page per day, highlighting both the outstanding performances of the athletes as well as the spirit of the Paralympics.

The Paralympic Media Award 2005, in the Written (print) category is awarded to The Daily Telegraph for both the quality and quantity of their coverage of the ATHENS 2004 Paralympic Games and their ongoing commitment to the promotion of Paralympic sport, its athletes and ideals.


 

Yahoo! Japan Logo

Written (Online): Prior to the ATHENS 2004 Paralympic Games, Yahoo! JAPAN opened the Athens Paralympic special site and promoted it on the Yahoo! JAPAN front page to publicize the Paralympics and invite wider spectators through the website. During the Paralympics, Yahoo! JAPAN provided news reports on the Paralympic Games on a daily basis to spread the spirit and dynamism of Paralympic sport. The site was open from 20 August to 30 September 2004.

The IPC is pleased to honour Yahoo! JAPAN not only for their extensive coverage of the ATHENS 2004 Paralympic Games (competition schedule, results, multimedia galleries, sports and venue information, athletes biographies and interviews, etc.), but also for their efforts to promote the Paralympics, including prominent links to the ATHENS 2004 Paralympic Games site on Yahoo! JAPAN homepage, as well as a charity auction to support the Japanese National Paralympic Committee.

Photo: Lieven Coudenys has covered the Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000, Salt Lake 2002 and ATHENS 2004 Paralympic Games.

The 31-year-old photographer from Bruges, Belgium, studied fine arts and photography at the Hogeschool Sint-Lukas in Brussels and graduated with a ‘Master in Fine Arts’ degree. He is the third generation in a family business doing reportage fashion, industrial and publicity photography. In addition, Mr. Coudenys takes creative black-and-white art photos which are displayed in the ‘Coudenys Photo-Art Gallery’ in the historical centre of Bruges.

Mr. Coudneys photographic work, as demonstrated by the 5 photos submitted for the Paralympic Media Awards, goes one step further, inviting the viewer to share with the athlete, their moment of tirumph, of disapointment or simply their effort. The IPC is proud to honour Mr. Coudenys for his success in visualizing the Spirit of the Paralympic Games.
