Margita Prokeinova was encouraged by her father to take up swimming following the loss of both her legs in an accident. Although Prokeinova competes in Butterfly, Freestyle, the Individual Medley, Breaststroke and Backstroke events, she has had most of her success in the 50m Butterfly competitions. At the Atlanta Paralympic Games in 1999 she placed 2nd, a result she repeated at the Sydney Paralympic Games in 2000. However, at the World Championships in 2003 she achieved first place and will be hoping to repeat that performance at the ATHENS 2004 Paralympic Games.
