Nathalie du Toit began competing in Swimming at a very early age and at only 14 years old, competed in the Commonwealth Games held in Kuala Lumpur in 1998. Three years later she lost her left leg at the knee following a scooter accident. Regardless, du Toit has continued to compete at the Manchester 2002 Commonwealth Games, winning gold in the 50m and 100m Freestyle multi-disability events and making the final of the 800m able-bodied event with a time of 9.13sec. For her performances she was awarded the David Dixon Award for most outstanding athlete at the 2002 Commonwealth Games. The 2002 South African Sportswoman of the Year won´t be stopping there. Already in 2004 du Toit has set four world records in the 1500m Freestyle, the 100m Butterfly and the 800m Freestyle, which she then broke one month later. The road to ATHENS 2004 looks pretty bright for this 20 year old.
