IPC Athletics Classification System
Many of the IPC Membership are aware in 2003 IPC Athletics initiated a research program to consider how the sports classification system could be enhanced by the application of a more scientific and objectively based approach. Such enhancements would be consistent with the IPC Classification Code.
You will find below two documents prepared by the principle researcher, Dr. Sean
Tweedy. The first is the IPC Athletics Classification Manual for Physical Impairments, which
presents the rationale for and proposes a new approach to classification in IPC Athletics.
The second is a proposed Model of Implementation.
IPC Athletics now seeks feedback from the IPC membership on both of these documents. Once
this is received the IPC Athletics Sports Technical Committee will review it and a final model and
system of implementation will be developed and presented to the IPC Governing Board for
consideration.
Feedback should be submitted in writing and on NPC/ IOSD letterhead and received at IPC
Headquarters by no later than Thursday 28 February 2008 (by standard mail or email
helen.murphy@paralympic.org )
Any questions in relation to this process should be directed to IPC Athletics Sports Manager,
Helen Murphy via email.
IPC Athletics look forward to your comments.
Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games Qualification
IPC Athletics is conducting an exercise to project the number of qualification slots, by NPC in advance of applying the IPC Athletics World Ranking List Allocation Method.
IPC Athletics has sent to all NPC's information and forms to complete the exercise. NPC's have
been asked to read, complete and return the forms no later than 30 November 2007 by email to
ipcathletics@paralympic.org or fax +49 228 2097
209. If IPC Athletics do not receive the forms, the allocation for your NPC will remain at the
level of the first quota, previously communicated to you in early 2007 and included on the enclosed
form. If an NPC does not currently have a quota, none will be awarded.
IPC Athletics will distribute to NPC’s the qualification slot quota allocation by gender from
the IPC Athletics World Ranking List Allocation Method no later than 31 January 2008.
Please note this process is independent of the Bipartite Commission Invitation Allocation
Method in the Beijing 2008 Qualification Criteria document and is simply an exercise to determine
the needs and manage expectations.
IPC Athletics Ranking Lists Available Online
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) added a new tool to its website and officially
launched the IPC Athletics Ranking List.

Regional Rankings (Africa, Asia, Americas, Europe, Oceania) as well as Beijing Qualification Period
