Lifting Off in Europe

The Eastern European countries dominated the medal tally of the 2005 IPC Powerlifting European Championships held in Algarve, Portugal, during early November. In addition to the standard competition, additional events for junior athletes were included.

At the event, several world and European records fell. Ryszard Rogala (POL) set a new European record in the men's 90kg category. This was a historical moment as the previous record belonged to the former best ever Polish lifter, Ryszard Tomaszewski.

In the Junior Competition, Rafal Roch (POL) set new Junior world and European records in the men's 48kg weight category with a lift of 142.50kg. Slawomir Szymanski (POL) set a Junior world and European record in the men's 52kg weight category, lifting 140.00kg, Andriy Byelikov (UKR) set a Junior European record in the 60kg weight category with a lift of 127.5kg and Glen Puxley (GBR) lifted 150.00kg in the men’s 100kg+ weight category to set new junior world and European records.

Two women’s Junior European records were also set by Raisa Toporkova (UKR) in the 40kg weight category (67.50kg) and Oliva Hyman (GBR) in the 75kg weight category (60kg).

IPC Powerlifting Chairperson Pol Wautermartens commented: "The competition itself was very successful but by allowing the junior athletes to also compete showcased some emerging talent and gives us all hope for the future of our sport."
