 A record number of 125 delegations have confirmed their
participation at the Games of the XI Paralympiad in Sydney, making this the largest Games
in Paralympic history.
A total of 103 countries competed at the 1996 Paralympic Games in Atlanta, and 83
countries competed at the 1992 Paralympic Games in Barcelona.
The list of entries for the Sydney Paralympics includes some 26 countries who did not
participate at the |
previous Games in Atlanta: Barbados, Benin,
Cambodia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guinea Republic, Iraq, Laos, Lebanon,
Lesotho, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Mongolia, Niger, Palestine, Papua New Guinea,
Philippines, Rwanda, Samoa, Sudan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Vanuatu and Vietnam.
The National Paralympic Committees of Canada, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Spain and the
United States have confirmed teams of a significant size. The largest delegation will come
from host country Australia, with more than 400 athletes and team officials.
Athletes from East Timor, which has been presently placed under the supervision of the
international community through the intervention of the United Nations, will compete under
the flag of the International Paralympic Committee. |
