Record Number of Delegations at Sydney 2000

The Sydney Opera by Night

A record number of 125 delegations have confirmed their participation at the Games of the XI Paralympiad in Sydney, making this the largest Games in Paralympic history.

A total of 103 countries competed at the 1996 Paralympic Games in Atlanta, and 83 countries competed at the 1992 Paralympic Games in Barcelona.

The list of entries for the Sydney Paralympics includes some 26 countries who did not participate at the

previous Games in Atlanta: Barbados, Benin, Cambodia, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Guinea Republic, Iraq, Laos, Lebanon, Lesotho, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Mongolia, Niger, Palestine, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Rwanda, Samoa, Sudan, Turkey, Turkmenistan, Vanuatu and Vietnam.

The National Paralympic Committees of Canada, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Spain and the United States have confirmed teams of a significant size. The largest delegation will come from host country Australia, with more than 400 athletes and team officials.

Athletes from East Timor, which has been presently placed under the supervision of the international community through the intervention of the United Nations, will compete under the flag of the International Paralympic Committee.
