The European Paralympic Committee (EPC) is pleased to announce the approval of the
"Doping Disables" project by the European Commission. Doping Disables is the
first European Union project entrusted to EPC. The awarding of this grant will enable the
EPC to be the first IPC member to lead a campaign in the fight against doping for athletes
with disabilities. Although a European project primarily targeting European Union
athletes, the Doping Disables project will seek to reach all athletes with a disability
globally.
In recent years, doping has become a critical issue in the world of sports. Doping
Disables targets all European athletes with a disability in order to raise awareness and
knowledge about health risks associated with doping, fair play aspects and the specifics
in doping and testing on athletes with a disability. In addition to focusing on athletes,
the project also aims to increase the knowledge of doping officials, coaches, athletes'
families and all people interested in disabled sports. There have been positive tests in
the past in disability sport. Through the project's educational campaign and doping
testing, Europe hopefully will see a reduction in the use of banned drugs and
"boosting". "Boosting" might be described as a process of raising the
blood pressure dangerously by abnormal means.
With the support of the IPC Doping Commission, an information campaign with exhibition and
printed material will be created. In connection to European and National Championships,
the educational material will be presented with the assistance of the National Paralympic
Committees of many EU countries. Education seminars and information meetings for national
doping officials and doping testing at these events is also planned.
In addition to the IPC, many European National Paralympic Committees have accepted to be
co-organizers of the project including Denmark, Finland, France, Sweden, Germany, Spain,
Belgium, the Netherlands and Portugal. The EPC, IPC and all members of the "Doping
Disables" project are looking forward to a successful start to this project at the
Sydney Paralympic Games on the fight against doping in sport.
