Salt Lake City 2002: Spotlight on the Winter Sports

The Mascott 2002

As the Sydney Paralympic Summer Games comes to a climactic end, preparations are underway for the world's elite winter-sport athletes with disabilities to compete at the VIII Paralympic Winter Games beginning 7 March 2002. With less than 500 days between the Paralympic Summer and Winter Games, the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games of 2002 (SLOC) is a bustling place.

SLOC is the first winter organizing committee to integrate its preparations for both the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. The 2002 Paralympic Winter Games will be held 7 to16 March, featuring approximately 1,100 athletes and officials from 40 countries. Competition will take place in three sports and 25 events at Soldier Hollow, E Center and Snowbasin Ski Area. The final program has been set and will be presented in the December edition of "The Paralympian".

More than 325,000 tickets for the Salt Lake 2002 Paralympic Winter Games will go on sale beginning February 2001. General admission tickets to the athletic events will be priced at US$15 and US$25. For the first time in Paralympic Games history, spectators will be able to order tickets in real-time via the Internet at www.saltlake2002.com. Tickets will also be available through retail outlets and by telephone order. Family passes, flexible coupon books and group discounts will also be available.

SLOC is more than two-thirds of the way towards reaching its goal of 26,000 volunteers required to make the Games a success. Of the total, 6,000 will assist with the Paralympics.

SLOC will send more than 20 representatives to the Paralympic Games in Sydney. This staff will serve both in operational and observer roles, with special attention focused on transportation, venue transition, staffing and information services issues. From this experience, SLOC hopes to learn what works and what does not, in order to stage the best possible Paralympic Winter Games in 2002.
