IPC Headquarters
Some significant organizational changes have taken place within the IPC since Atlanta
1996. With the constant expansion of the Paralympic Movement, the members of the IPC
decided three years ago that the time was right for the IPC to support its constituencies
with professional staff and a headquarters, where all operations are centralized.
Previously, the organization was run almost exclusively by volunteers.
The former German capital of Bonn was successful in its application to become the new home
of the IPC against bids from other cities such as Madrid and Paris. The Headquarters
building, which dates back to the 1890s and which has been completely renovated, was
officially opened on 3 September 1999 and is wheelchair-accessible.
Services provided by Headquarters lie in the areas of membership administration, sports,
finance and legal matters, media and communication, and information technologies.
Professional staff have been employed beginning 1998 to manage the daily operations of the
Paralympic movement. During the Paralympic Games Sydney 2000, staff will also be working
from Headquarters, in addition to the team working in Sydney, and will serve as another
point of contact.
