Sports Assemblies:
Leadership and Directions
for the Next Years

At the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games, the National Paralympic Committees and member disabled sports organizations of the IPC will participate in the quadrennial Sports Assemblies to elect their future sports leadership and continue the development of rules and regulations into the next Paralympiad.

All sports on the Paralympic Summer Programme with the exception of Wheelchair Basketball and Wheelchair Tennis will host quadrennial Sports Assemblies and meetings during the Games. During these Sports Assemblies, delegates will receive sports reports, discuss and vote on motions to change sports governing structures and rules, and elect representatives to their Sports Assembly Executive Committee (SAEC) or equivalent body. Each Sports' governing structure is unique, however all Sports have a Chairperson responsible for the coordination and management of their committee. All elected officers are volunteers, who dedicate their free time to sport for athletes with a disability. They are supported by the staff of the IPC Headquarters Sport Department.

The majority of these meeting will be held in the International Zone of the Paralympic Village and look to be well attended by the IPC constituency. Over 620 delegates and observers are registered to attend the IPC Championship Sports Assemblies alone.

IPC Athletes' Committee Elections

All Aa accredited athletes participating in the Sydney 2000 Paralympic Games will have the right to vote in the IPC Athletes' Committee Elections. Athletes will elect six summer representatives from the list of nominees, which were made by their respective National Paralympic Committees.

The Athletes' Committee is comprised of 9 athlete representatives, six elected during the Paralympic Summer Games and three during the winter. The representatives hold their positions until the next Paralympic Games. The Chairman of the Athletes' Committee shall be elected by the new membership at the first meeting following the elections.

The Athletes' Committee Elections will be held in the Main Dining facility of the Paralympic Village from 22 -26 October between the hours of 13:00 and 20:00 daily. The IPC asks all NPCs and athletes to encourage participation in this important process.

The main objective of the Athletes' Committee is to ensure that athletes' needs are represented in the in the IPC decision-making process. In pursuing this major goal, the Athletes' Committee aims to increase communication with athletes, to act as an athlete advisory body, to improve awareness of athlete representation and to actively promote athlete representation at all levels.

Since the beginning of the year, the Chairman of the IPC Athletes Committee takes part in the Athletes' Committee meetings of the International Olympic Committee. This gives the Paralympic athletes the opportunity to have their voices heard not only in the rather small world of sport for athletes with a disability, but also beyond in the sphere of international sport and the Olympic movement.

A list of all nominees for the Athletes' Committee election can be found on the following page.
