| CP-ISRA World Games Attracts More Than 800
All roads lead to Notting-ham, England this summer for CP-ISRA World Games from July
23-28 and arrangements are well on course for a fitting follow-up to the Sydney
extravaganza. Already more than 800 competitors have committed themselves to take part and
it is expected that the final tally will be more than 1,000 from some 40 countries.
CP-ISRA is delighted with the response but not surprised because this event, which
takes place every four years, has now established a world-wide reputation. It is a further
indication that the CP movement is taking off and I am particularly pleased that among the
new countries who have entered is Kenyathe first African nation to come to the Games
apart from South Africa. The World Games will feature seven sportsathletics,
swimming, cycling, table tennis, bowls, powerlifting and soccerand these will have
World Championship status.
It is not only the elite competitors who will be catered for at the Games, however,
because an extensive program of workshops is also included. There will be a four-day
Boccia Work-shop from July 23-27, in conjunction with the World Games and intended for all
those who have an interest in the development of this fast-growing sport. It is also
designed to look at the new group of non-CPs coming into boccia. The workshop will feature
a close look at the rules as they affect the groups already included and will examine a
possible classification system for non-CPs. From July 22-25 there will be a
Recreation/Development Workshop, organized in conjunction with the international group
RESPO-DSDI, and the national organization Youth Sport Trust. This will include work on
adaptive activities, particularly for those with a severe disability.
A CP-ISRA Seminar Program will operate on three evenings during the World Games and
will deal with the following topics:
- The Place of the International Organizations Sport for the Disabled in the Paralympic
Movement (Dr. Bob Steadward, President of IPC)
- Sports Technical Work and Changes for CP-ISRA (Ken Black, Chair of CP-ISRA Sports
Technical Committee)
- Open Forum on Selected and Appropriate Topics (Alan Dickson, Vice-President CP-ISRA
Development & Communication).

| Olympic Honors for IBSA President
Enrique Sanz, President of the International Blind Sport Association (IBSA) and member
of the IPC Executive Committee, was awarded the Olympic Order by the International Olympic
Committee. The awards ceremony will take place 12 May at the Headquarters of the Spanish
Olympic Committee in the presence of IOC President SEM Juan Antonio Samaranch.
This recognition shows the high level of development and acknowledgement Mr. Sanz was
able to achieve for sport for athletes with a disability during the past years. He has
been President of IBSA since 1993 and has also served on the IPC Executive Committee since
then.
Mr. Sanz was the driving force behind the organization of the 1st World Blind Sports
Championships in Madrid in July 1998, where, for the first time, top-level competitions
were held together in four different disciplines (athletics, swimming, goalball and judo)
at the same time and place. He also promoted the inclusion, for the first time, of two
athletics events for the blind (womens 100m and mens 200m) at the IAAF World
Athletics Championships in Seville in August 1999.
As Mr. Sanz will take over the post of Secretary-General of the World Blind Union later
this year, he will not stand for re-election as IBSA President. |
