In the Service of Sport: IPC Members on IOC Commissions

Press Commission Dr. Nabil Salem, IPC Vice-President (Marketing and Communication)
Radio and Television Commission Dr. York Chow, IPC Vice-President (Policy, Planning and Development)
Sport and Law Commission Dr. Jens Bromann, IPC Legal Committee
Sport and Environment Commission Dr. Robert Steadward, IPC President
Sport for All Commission André Auberger, IPC Treasurer

Coordination Commission for Olympic Games:

2002 Thomas Reinecke, IPC Chief Operating Officer
2004 Miguel Sagarra, IPC Secretary General
2006 François Terranova, IPC Vice-President (Games Liaison)

Evaluation Commission for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad:

2008 Bob McCullough, President, ISMWSF

Three of the IPC representatives on the IOC Commissions comment on the meetings that they have attended:

“The IOC Athletes Commission was instituted in 1981, and in 1999 it established a position for an IPC Athletes Committee representative. This was one of the first official links between the IOC and the IPC, and this representative serves as a vital link between the athletes of the Olympic and Paralympic Movements.

The last meeting in December was held at the IOC Headquarters in Lausanne. At the meeting, doping, and specifically food supplements, was given special attention. The meeting ended with a joint session with the IOC Executive Board followed by a short press conference. The next meeting will be in connection with the 112th IOC Session in Moscow in July.

To be included in the work of the IOC Athletes Commission is an important recognition of the achievements of all Paralympic athletes, and opens up new possibilities to coordinate the efforts to improve the Olympic and Paralympic Games.”

Kjartan Haugen, IOC Athletes Commission

“Our Movement has received a big push with its high profile within the Olympic movement especially after the Sydney legacy. Some of the members of this commission were discussing how close the IOC and the IPC have become. As a result, many National Olympic Committees of countries that are not advanced in the Paralympic Movement will start to have services for disabled sports.”

Dr. Nabil Salem, IOC Press Commission

“I have had the opportunity to attend two meetings of the IOC Coordination Commission Athens 2004 (November and May 2001), and I must admit that I personally have got incredible support from Dr. Jacques Rogge, Chairman of this Commission, and from the rest of its members. The support of the IOC has played an important role in the signing of the contract for the Paralympic Games and I do think that our presence, the IPC presence, in the different Coordination Commissions provides us with a unique opportunity to show our concerns before the key persons of the different Organizing Committees.”

Miguel Sagarra, Coordination Commission for the Olympic Games 2004
