Obituaries
The IPC deeply regrets the passing away of two members, namely
the former President of the National Paralympic Committee of
Japan, Dr. Yoshisuke Kasai, and the Secretary General of the
Austrian NPC, Daniel Binter.
One is reminded of Dr. Kasai's leadership for the 1964 Summer
Paralympic Games in Tokyo. We are sure Dr. Kasai was pleased
that Japan was the first country to host both the Paralympic
Summer and Winter Games, and that tremendous progress has been
made for Paralympic athletes in the years between Tokyo in 1964
and Nagano in 1998. Japan has played an important role in the
advancement of the Paralympic Games and much of this was due
to Dr. Kasai's efforts, as former Vice Minister Health &
Welfare, First Chairman of JSAD and most recently Honourary
Chairman of JSAD.
Mr. Binter, who suddenly passed away in May, was one of the
pioneers of the international Paralympic Movement. He was the
representative for Austria for many years and was well-known
and highly respected. His discreet manner and to-the-point contributions
will be greatly missed throughout the Movement and his place
will be difficult to fill within the Austrian Paralympic Committee
and the Austrian Organization for Sport for Athletes with a
Disability (ÖBSV).
