Paralympic Games / Salt Lake City

Journey of Fire – the Build-Up to the Winter Games in Salt Lake City

The Salt Lake Organizing Committee is planning the Paralympic Journey of Fire, which is a vibrant six-days of ceremonies meant to continue the high level of excitement between the
Olympics and the Paralympics. It is a symbolic movement of fire from the outer edges of Utah to Salt Lake City.

The Ceremonies of the Journey of Fire will be presented in three levels, beginning with the Community Celebrations from 2 to 5 March, 2002. 16 Utah communities will hold Celebrations where they will have the opportunity to light their own Community Cauldron. The celebrations consist of 60-90 minutes of entertainment, often provided by children in their community, video presentations, and messages from the community members. One side of the base will be emblazoned with the Paralympic Journey of Fire Logo, while the other sides will be filled with notes of encouragement and good wishes to the athletes from each of the communities.

The second level commences on 6 March with the Paralympic Flame Celebrations. All sixteen communities will come together in Salt Lake City at the State Capitol to acknowledge the Paralympic Athletes by lighting one large cauldron from each of the Community Cauldron ceremonies. At this ceremony, all Community Cauldron pedestals will be on display.

The third and last stage of the pre-Games festivities is Paralympic Flame Run on 7 March. Seventy-five to one hundred runners will be chosen to run the Paralympic Torch through the streets of Salt Lake City from the State Capitol to Rice-Eccles Olympic Stadium. The runners will pass by Legacy Plaza, the City and County Building and through the Rotary sponsored “Children of All Abilities Play Park at Liberty Park” before heading to the Paralympic Opening Ceremonies.

Winter Sports Assemblies To Determine Policy and Elect Leadership

All NPCs and IOSDs practicing a winter sport, either Alpine Skiing, Ice Sledge Hockey or Nordic Skiing, have now been sent the new manual for the sport assemblies to be held in Salt Lake City, USA March 12 – 13, 2002.

The main aspects of these conventions are the election of a new Sport Assembly Executive Committee (SAEC) and submitted motions are to be voted on by the assembly.

During these Winter Paralympic Games again, athletes practicing a particular sport will also be asked to vote for one of their sport colleagues to sit on the SAEC and voice the athletes’ opinion. In addition three athletes representing winter sports on the IPC Athletes Committee are to be voted for in a separate process.

The Sport Assembly alone determines the future development, rules and regulations, programs, competition calendar and other changes in the respective sport. The IPC Sport Department thus strongly encourages NPCs widely practicing a winter sport to submit nominations for the respective SAEC for the term of office 2002 to 2006 as well as athlete representatives for the IPC Athletes Committee. Motions are also being accepted by NPCs widely practicing the respective sport. All NPCs not widely practicing the sport in question will be admitted to attend the assemblies as observers, who are not granted voting or speaking right though.

Please note that all forms (registrations, nominations, mandates as well as motions) have to be received by the IPC Headquarters by post no later than January 11, 2002.
