Jordan Conducts Workshops in three Sports

From 21 to 24 October,2001 the Jordan Sports Federation for the Handicapped organized simultaneous workshops in order to popularize boccia, soccer, and table tennis for people with a disability in Jordan. The events were sponsored by the Embassy of the Netherlands and Global Sports Partners.

Tom Langen conducted the boccia and soccer clinics. Dr. Aart Kruimer presented medical information on cerebral palsy. Both instructors are from the Netherlands and represent CP-ISRA, the international governing body for sports for cerebral palsy athletes.

Future Boccia Paralympians

In total, forty-nine people participated in the boccia and soccer workshops, including physiotherapists, teachers, coaches and officials. Over three days, participants were instructed in classification, rules, equipment, and strategy of play. Sixty students from Jordan’s Cerebral Palsy foundation also took advantage of the training. Those students who were exposed to these sports for the first time expressed great excitement and hope of a bright future in Jordan.

The second workshop concentrated on classification in table tennis. Attendants included Jordan's Paralympic gold medallist
Maha Bargouthi, along with twenty-nine participants who were either players, physiotherapists, coaches or officials. The workshops continued the tradition of strong table tennis participation in Jordan and helped ensure a bright future for the sport.

World Conference on Women and Sport to be held in Canada next May

The World Conference on Women and Sport to be held in Montréal, Canada 16 to 19 May, 2002 will offer a unique opportunity for participants to share experience, strengthen international connections and stimulate action at local, national and international levels. Delegates will represent a cross-section of organizations and countries, but all participants have a common interest in supporting the development of women and girls through sport. This conference will build on the momentum created in Brighton, UK (1994) and Windhoek, Namibia (1998). The emphasis is on practical experience and ways to support positive, practical change.

Important steps are being taken in the area of women and disability sport. The members of the Paralympic Sport Movement have been involved in previous conferences on this topic. The theme of the conference is “Investing in Change”. Its objectives are to assess progress over the past four years; create a forum for sharing knowledge, expertise and lessons learned; and provide the necessary tools and support to effect change at all levels and in all areas of sport. The conference is for men and women who make decisions or influence policy related to women and sport at national and international levels.

The co ference organizers invite to:

  • Celebrate the success and progress in the world of
    women and sport since 1998.
  • Share your experience and expertise with other professionals.
  • Learn about new initiatives and successful strategies from participants and presenters to apply to your own area of influence.
  • Interact with other leaders and advocates working throughout the world to facilitate sport opportunities for girls and women.
  • Recognize that the lessons learned from others can help you meet challenges in your organization or local context.
  • Create new partnerships with individuals and organizations and strengthen existing networks.
  • Be part of an on-going tradition, supporting the development of women and girls through sport world-wide.
