Eight Gold Medals for China

At the IPC Table Tennis World Championships, a total of 319 athletes, 224 male and 95 female players, from 45 countries participated in the open singles, class singles and team events, which took place from August 13 to 23 2002 in Chinese Taipei. The outgoing Vice-Chairperson and Technical Delegate, Řivind Eriksen, described the successful event as “the best IPC World Table Tennis Championships ever”. The highly competitive Championships had participants full of great spirit.

The final medal tally confirmed China, France and Korea as the top three countries in the world of Table Tennis. China won eight gold medals, one gold medal more than France, but France had the highest number of medals in total: 16 (China totalled 12). Korea achieved third place regarding gold medals (5) with a total of 11 medals all in all.

During the World Championships, the IPC Table Tennis Sports Assembly was held. Among the main decisions taken were:

  • to continue investigating a closer working relationship with our able-bodied counterpart, the International Table Tennis Federation,
  • to accept amendments proposed to the classification system for standing players
  • to allocate more ranking points for doubles matches to encourage this exciting form of the game
  • to add rules about dress, the use of belts and corsets, to clarify the rules for players touching, moving and/or using the table and additions to the wheelchair structure
  • to encourage tournaments for juniors and women specifically
The International Paralympic Table Tennis Committee would like to thank the Chinese Taipei Paralympic Committee for hosting such a successful event as well as the referees, umpires, classifiers and, in particular, the volunteers for making the IPC Table Tennis Family feel so welcome in Chinese Taipei.
