ATHENS 2004: Putting Plans into Action
Presentation of ATHENS 2004 Paralympic Games in Volos
The local community of the Olympic city of Volos had the chance
to sneak preview the organisation of the 2004 Paralympic Games.
The preview was delivered through a presentation given by the
2004 Paralympic Games General Manager, Ioanna Karyofylli, on
July 1.
According to recent research carried out by ATHENS 2004 on
Volunteerism for Olympic and Paralympic Games, the people
of Volos hold one of the top places in the ranking of Olympic
and Paralympic volunteers applications.Volos is one of the four
Olympic cities, apart from Athens, where the Olympic Football
preliminaries will be carried out.

During the event, the programme for people of a Greek origin
living all over the globe, “Greeks Abroad”, was presented by
the relevant Manager, Demetra Egan. The programme aims to
bring together Greeks from around the world under a common
cause: the 2004 Games. The event was concluded with a concert
given by George Beliris, a visually impaired musician from Volos.
In the framework of the ATHENS 2004 Communicators Program,
a number of presentations for raising awareness for the organisation
of the Paralympic Games have been scheduled in other
cities of Greece.

The Paralympic Village

7000 Beds in the Paralympic Village
On July 15, the Paralympic Games Advisory Committee discussed
the Paralympic Games Accommodation Programme.According
to the plans of ATHENS 2004, it is calculated that 7000 beds will
be used by athletes, team officials and technical officials in the
fully accessible Paralympic Village.
Progress of Competition Department
Progress in the Competition Department of Paralympic Sport is
continuously moving forward. The first draft of the competition
schedule per event was completed during the past month. A list
for technical officials per category has been developed and sent
to the IPC for approval. Finally, a list of equipment has been sent
to all relevant technical delegates.
ATHENS 2004 Observed 3rd Athletics World Championships
A delegation of 18 observers visited the 3rd IPC Athletics World
Championships, which took place in July in Lille, France. The delegation,
which was headed by the Paralympic Games General
Manager, Ioanna Karyofylli, included representatives from a
wide range of divisions and departments of the 2004 Paralympic
Games Organising Committee. Delegates experienced the competitions
and organisational aspects of the World Championships
and had useful meetings with the Lille Organising Committee.
