IPC and UCI Signed Agreement

The International Cycling Union (UCI) and the IPC signed an Agreement of Co-operation in which the UCI and the IPC consent to collaborate in the sport of Cycling for athletes with a disability. In particular, the IPC and the UCI will work together to progress a joint development plan for Cycling for riders with a disability, initially for a period of four years.    IPC President Phil Craven and UCI President Hein Verbruggen shaking hands after having signed the agreement formalising co-operation in the sport of Cycling

“The Agreement will ensure and enhance the quality of the sport of Cycling in general and for riders with a disability in particular,” said Phil Craven, IPC President. “The IPC looks forward to a fruitful co-operation with the UCI.”

The latest UCI Cycling regulations, with amendments to accommodate the specific needs of riders with a disability and acknowledging the range of cycle types used, will govern the Cycling competition at the Paralympic Games as well as the IPC Cycling Championships. In co-operation with the IPC, the UCI will add a category designated “Riders with Disabilities” to its existing list of licence categories for men and women. Furthermore, the UCI and the IPC will encourage the worldwide growth of cycling for the disabled with an ongoing awareness campaign to affiliated National Cycling Federations and National Paralympic Committees.

“This Agreement is very important for the UCI and for the whole cycling world. Since a long time already, cycling for disabled is supported by our Federation and we will continue to co-operate for its development,” said Hein Verbruggen, President of the UCI.

Mr. Craven and Mr.Verbruggen signed the Agreement of Co-operation on July 30 2002, during the XVII Commonwealth Games, at a press conference at the Velodrome (the National Cycling Centre) in Manchester, Great Britain.
