IPC Governing Board Approves Sochi 2014 Qualification Criteria

The qualification criteria for the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games will be published on Monday 28 May after the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Governing Board ratified it during a two day meeting in Madrid, Spain.

At the 61st IPC Governing Board meeting, which took place on Friday and Saturday (20-21 April), the Board was also updated on the progress of the next three Paralympic Games – London 2012, Sochi 2014 and Rio 2016.

Sir Philip Craven, President of the IPC said: “It was an extremely productive few days in the Spanish capital and I would like to thank all the Governing Board members for attending.

“It was the last time London 2012 will present to the Board ahead of this summer’s Paralympic Games and Chris Holmes, LOCOG’s Director of Paralympic Integration, left us all full of confidence that his team will deliver a truly great Games.

“In addition to the Sochi 2014 qualification criteria being ratified we also received an update from Sochi 2014 President Dmitry Chernyshenko on the progress being made in Russia ahead of the next Winter Games. Carlos Nuzman, President of the Rio 2016 Organizing Committee also informed us about preparations for the first Paralympic Games in South America in four years time.”

This was the first Governing Board meeting following last December’s IPC General Assembly in Beijing, China and the draft minutes from that meeting were approved. The IPC Membership will be invited to formally adopt them at the next IPC General Assembly in 2013.

In Madrid the Governing Board also adopted the IPC audited accounts for the 2011 financial year and approved the publication of the annual statistics of the 2011 IPC Anti-Doping Programme which will also be provided to WADA, as required by the IPC Anti-Doping Code. These statistics will be published shortly.

The Governing Board also unanimously agreed the appointment of Jobo Raswoko, President of NPC Lesotho, to the IPC Development Committee which is chaired by Governing Board Member Rita van Driel.

Updates were also given on the IPC-IOC Agreement and the IPC Academy, a joint venture between the IPC and the World Academy of Sport to improve the knowledge of those involved in the Paralympic Movement, presented their four year strategic plan.

The next IPC Governing Board meeting will take place on 27 August in London, two days prior to the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
