IPC reveals February Athlete of the Month Shortlist

Five winter sport athletes and teams are in the running for IPC Athlete of the Month.

The public now has until 17:00 (CEST) on 8 March to vote for which athlete or team it thinks had the best performance last month.

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has announced the shortlist for February’s Athlete of the Month award, and the public can now vote for the winner via the poll on the homepage of www.Paralympic.org.

Last month was highlighted by several major winter sport events, including the IPC Alpine Skiing and IPC Nordic Skiing World Championships, as well as the World Wheelchair Curling Championships.

The finalists for February’s top performers include:

- Marie Bochet (France): Bochet won gold in all five of her events at the 2013 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships in La Molina, Spain. The 19-year-old standing skier finished first in the downhill, giant slalom, slalom, super combined and super-G events.

- Jon Santacana (Spain): On his home slopes of La Molina at the 2013 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships, the visually impaired skier won gold medals in the downhill, giant slalom and super-G.

- Taiki Morii (Japan): The sit skier won gold in the giant slalom, super combined and super-G events at the 2013 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships, in addition to picking up a silver in the slalom discipline.

- Brian McKeever (Canada): In the first three days of the 2013 IPC Nordic Skiing World Championships in Solleftea, Sweden, McKeever won golds in both of his races. He finished first in the visually impaired cross-country sprint, as well as the cross-country long 20km event.

- Roman Petushkov (Russia): The sit skier won two golds and a bronze in February at the 2013 IPC Nordic Skiing World Championships in Solleftea, Sweden. In the sitting category, he won the cross-country sprint and cross-country long 15km races, and he finished third in the biathlon short 7.5km event.

- Canada’s wheelchair curling team: The team won their third title in the sport after defeating Sweden in the final round, 4-3, at the Ice Cube Curling Centre in Sochi, Russia.

The public now has until 17:00 (CEST) on 8 March to vote for which athlete or team it thinks had the best performance last month.

The nominations are compiled from submissions by National Paralympic Committees and International Federations.
