Sport Specific Information
When and where did you begin this sport?
She began taking ski lessons at age six, soon after the amputation of her leg.
Why this sport?
Her adoptive family are avid skiers. "Once I learned how to walk and be mobile again [following the amputation of her leg], myself, along with four other siblings, all enjoyed sports and outdoor activities together."
General Interest
Most influential person in career
Marc Mast, who was her first skiing coach. "Throughout ski racing and the local ski team, Marc was along my side every step of the way. I still remember how I felt [in the beginning] on top of the mountains - to be free for one of the first times in my life. Marcís efforts and encouragement along the way are what gave me strength to continue and to love it every step of the way." (teamusa.org, 01 Jan 2012)
Injuries
Due to multiple tears in her knee, she had to pull out of most events at the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games in Vancouver. (teamusa.org, 01 Jan 2012)
Awards and honours
She was a torch bearer at the 2002 Paralympic Winter Games in Salt Lake Ciy. "I knew straight away when I saw the Opening Ceremony at those Games that I wanted to be a part of it." (teamusa.org, 01 Jan 2012)
Impairment
She was born without a knee or ankle joint in her right leg and her left hand was not fully developed, due to amniotic band syndrome. Her leg was amputated when she was six years old. The operation also involved toes being removed from her foot and grafted onto her left hand to form fingers. (arluckpromotions.com, 2009; mtexpress.com, 02 April 2004)
