When and where did you begin this sport?
She took up athletics in 1985 at school in Umtata, South Africa. She came from a rural village called Transkei and effectively coached herself. She turned professional in 1988.
Why this sport?
She enjoyed sports as an able-bodied person. After she started using a wheelchair, one of her teachers encouraged her to take up javelin.

Impairment
In 1982 at age 12 she started to feel weak and soon afterwards found she could not walk any more. She was in a semi-coma for two years and became paralysed from the fourth vertebra down due to a tuberculosis infection in her spinal cord. (zar.co.za, 18 Nov 2010)
