São Paulo will be home to the third stage of the 2017 World Para Athletics Grand Prix. From April 21-23, the best Para athletes in the world will compete in one of the first international competitions at the brand new Brazilian Paralympic Centre.

The multi-sports facility opened its doors in May 2016 and was chosen to hold the Sao Paulo 2017 Youth Parapan Am Games. Its super-fast track has already staged national competitions leading up to the Rio 2016 Paralympics.

Brazilian Paralympic gold medalist Silvania Costa Oliveira set the current world record for the women's long jump T11 at the Paralympic Centre, leaping 5.46m.

The Loterias Caixa Athletics Open Championships reaches its fifth edition. São Paulo has hosted three previously, always at the Ícaro de Castro Mello Stadium. In 2016, Rio's Olympic Stadium staged the competition, which also served as a Test Event for the Rio 2016 Paralympic Games. Around 300 athletes from more than 20 countries took part.

Brazil's biggest Para athletics stars, such as Petrucio Ferreira, Terezinha Guilhermina, Felipe Gomes are all expected to line up. The Athletics Open Championships is an important chance for the athletes to meet the qualification criteria for the London 2017 World Para Athletics Championship.
