Here are the Republic of Korea's top moments from the Milano Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games.
Teenager Yunji Kim makes history
Yunji Kim became an instant star at Milano Cortina 2026, winning two golds and three silvers at the Tesero Cross-Country Skiing Stadium.
At just 19, she became the first female Paralympic champion at a Winter Games. She topped the podium in Para biathlon’s women’s individual sitting event and the Para cross-country women’s 20km interval start sitting event.
“It’s like a dream. I will not be able to forget these moments,” Kim said about her first Paralympics. In her final event, the 20km interval start on 15 March, she finished ahead of Germany’s Anja Wicker and the USA’s Oksana Masters.
“I’m so happy because I didn’t know that I would win a gold medal today. It was my first 20km race, and I’m so excited,” she said. “I have trained well. I kept a good pace that I maintained throughout the whole race. That was the good point.”
Jehyuk Lee wins first Para snowboard medal
At the Cortina Para Snowboard Park, Jehyuk Lee picked up the Republic of Korea’s first-ever Paralympic medal in the sport.
Competing at his second Games, he claimed the bronze medal in the men’s snowboard cross SB-LL2 race, sharing the podium with gold medallist Emanuel Perathoner of Italy and silver medallist Ben Tudhope of Australia.
“I can’t believe it now. I’m really excited. I don’t remember (the race),” Lee said. “Maybe a few days later, I can remember this moment.”
Hyejin Baek and Yongsuk Lee take silver in wheelchair curling’s inaugural mixed doubles event
Hyejin Baek and Yongsuk Lee won a silver medal, finishing on the podium in the inaugural wheelchair curling mixed doubles event. The pair won their semifinal match against the USA 6-3, setting up a meeting against China’s Meng Wang and Jinqiao Yang. China won the final 9-7.
Baek and Lee have known each other for years and took up the sport together, playing for the same team in Korea. While Baek was competing at her second Paralympics, it was the first Games for Lee.
Lee said, “I’m grateful for my partner because she is like the rock that holds me whenever I have difficulties psychologically during games or during training.
“She is the one that holds me, so that is the part I am very grateful for.”
