US sprinter Hunter Woodhall, who competes in the T43 class, clinched 200m T44 silver and 400m T44 bronze at the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games. Here’s what you need to know about the 18-year-old as he goes for World Championship gold in London, Great Britain this month.
Five Facts About Hunter Woodhall
1. Woodhall was born with a congenital defect called fibular hemimelia in which the fibulas in his lower legs never formed. Both legs were amputated below the knee at 11-months-old.
2. At 16-years-old Woodhall came under the guidance of 1984 Olympic 800m champion Joachim Cruz of Brazil.
3. The American made his international debut at the 2015 World Championships, winning 400m T44 silver and 200m T44 bronze.
4. He is the Utah State High school champion and 400m record holder after clocking 46.56 seconds in April this year. He went on to lower that mark and break the 200m record too.
5. In May Woodhall became the first double-amputee to earn a NCAA Division 1 university scholarship in track and field. He heads to Arkansas later this year.
