Tlaxcala 2026: World records and home dominance light up Grand Prix in Mexico

Record-breaking performances and a dominant medal haul for the hosts highlighted the penultimate World Para Athletics Grand Prix of the season, held in Tlaxcala, Mexico, from 21 to 24 July.

The competition was the first of two Grand Prix meetings to be staged in Latin America, with Cali, Colombia, set to host the final event in September.

A total of 442 athletes (303 men and 139 women) from 26 nations competed over four days at the Una Nueva Historia Athletics Centre as Tlaxcala staged the Grand Prix for the first time.

Record-breaking show

While the hosts topped the medal table with 281 medals, including 99 gold, Costa Rica's three-time 
Paralympic gold medallist Sherman Guity Guity and Indonesia's teenager I Kadek Dwi Purwana Yasa stole the spotlight by setting new world records* in their respective events.

Guity Guity, who won Costa Rica's first-ever Paralympic gold medal in the men's 200m T64 at Tokyo 2020, clocked 10.61 seconds to equal Richard Browne's world record on his way to victory in the men's 100m T64 final. The 29-year-old also claimed the men's 200m T44/T64 title in 20.81 seconds.

The men's discus throw F57 final produced another standout performance as 18-year-old Purwana Yasa threw 48.68m to set a new world record* in the event. The previous mark of 48.55m had been held by Brazil's Thiago Paulino dos Santos since Sao Paulo in 2019.

There were also Americas records in the men's shot put F37 and F40 finals, with Mexico's Bryan Enriquez Gonzalez (15.11m) and Nahum Sanchez Vega (10.00m) producing record-breaking performances.

Local stars shine

The hosts, who fielded the largest delegation with 305 Para athletes (203 men and 102 women), lived up to expectations as established stars delivered and several emerging athletes impressed.

Two-time Paralympic bronze medallist Leonardo de Jesus Perez Juarez secured two gold medals, winning the men's 100m T52 in 17.71 seconds before adding the men's 400m T52 title in 1:03.07.
Paris 2024 Paralympic champion Juan Pablo Cervantes Garcia also delivered on home soil, winning the men's 100m T54 in 14.22 seconds.

Mexico's leading field athletes also enjoyed a successful campaign. Paris 2024 bronze medallist 
Rosa Maria Guerrero Cazares claimed the women's discus throw F55 title with a best effort of 26.95m, while Rosa Carolina Castro Castro won the women's discus throw F38 with a throw of 32.27m.

However, it was 25-year-old Dalia Silva Frias who stole the spotlight in the women's events, completing a golden treble in the women's 100m T38, women's 200m T38 and women's 400m T38.

Among other winners from the region, Dominican Republic's two-time Paralympian Luis Vasquez collected two gold medals after winning the men's 100m T47 in 11.46 seconds and the men's 400m T47 in 50.41 seconds.

International medallists

The international medal winners also featured several familiar names. Paris 2024 gold medallist Praveen Kumar won the men's high jump T44 with a clearance of 2.03m.

Indonesia finished second in the medal standings with 15 gold medals. Paris 2024 silver medallist Karisma Evi Tiarani stood out for the visitors winning the women's 100m T42 in 14.60 seconds before completing the double with victory in the women's long jump T42 with 3.86m.

Another Paris 2024 medallist, Saptoyogo Purnomo, also enjoyed a golden campaign, winning the men's 100m T37 in 11.44 seconds before helping Indonesia secure gold in the 4x100m universal relay in 47.36 seconds.

Nanda Mei Sholihah, a three-time gold medallist at the 2022 ASEAN Para Games, also claimed two titles after winning the women's 100m T47 in 12.28 seconds and the women's 200m T47 in 25.83 seconds.
