Two-time Paralympic bronze medallist Zoe Newson and 2014 world champion Ali Jawad will head Great Britain’s nine-member team at the World Para Powerlifting European Championships in Berck-Sur-Mer, France, between 25 and 29 May as announced by British Weightlifting.

It will be the first regional championships ahead of the 2019 World Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan, and the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Tom Whittaker, Paralympic Performance Director at British Weightlifting, said:

“This championship is an exciting opportunity for all the athletes selected for a number of different reasons. Not only is it the first Tokyo qualification event where eligible athletes can begin securing top 8 rankings but it takes place only 5 weeks after the team returned from the Commonwealth Games which presents a challenge in itself.

“A challenge I will enjoy watching the guys handle as the opportunity to start the qualification period with momentum at a time where the team has to quickly turn themselves around and go again which is unusual and demanding.”
