IPC impressed with Paralympic progress in Malawi following visit

International Paralympic Committee (IPC) Deputy Chief Executive Officer Kristina Molloy was in Lilongwe, Malawi, in late July to witness first-hand the progress the Malawi Paralympic Committee (MPC) is making to develop Para sport across the country.

During the visit, Molloy met with the MPC Secretary General Memory Baluwa and then joined the MPC for a meeting with the Malawi National Council of Sports. During this meeting, Molloy was introduced to several schoolteachers trained to implement in schools the IPC’s education programme “I’mPOSSIBLE” which aims to tackle stigma and create a more inclusive society. 

Molloy was also joined by the MPC President Dr James Chiutsi for meetings with the Ministry of Youth, Sport and Culture, as well as the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare.

Kristina Molloy said: “The Malawi Paralympic Committee under the leadership of its President Dr. James Chiutsi is doing an outstanding job creating systemic change to create sport opportunities for persons with disabilities all over the country. 

“To deliver this change they work closely with key government partners and through education with the implementation of the IPC’s education programme I’mPOSSIBLE. I left the country really impressed at the efforts of the MPC, as well as the commitment of national government and National Council of Sports to advance Para sport and its impact across the country.” 

NPC Malawi became an IPC member organisation in 2011 and competed at the Paralympic Games for the first time at Rio 2016.
