IPC publishes LA28 Paralympic Games Qualification Regulations for Para swimming

The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has published the Los Angeles 2028 Paralympic Games Qualification Regulations, including the Para swimming qualification criteria.

The Para swimming medal event programme for LA28 will feature 142 medal events (71 male, 64 female and 7 mixed) taking place from 17 to 26 August 2028, representing an increase of one event compared to the previous edition at Paris 2024. 

The total athlete quota allocation is 605, comprising 325 male athletes and 280 female athletes.

Qualification slots are allocated to National Paralympic Committees (NPCs), not to the individual athlete, with two exceptions: athletes who earn a qualification slot as gold medallists at the 2027 World Para Swimming Championships, and Bipartite Commission Invitation slots. 

Both of these are allocated to the individual athlete, not to the NPC. Each athlete may obtain only one qualification slot, whether allocated to their NPC or to the individual athlete. 

NPCs may receive a maximum of 34 male and 28 female qualification slots. Each NPC may enter up to three athletes per individual medal event.

The deadline for athletes to achieve Minimum Qualification Standard (MQS) performances for eligibility by their NPCs is 1 July 2028.

Qualification slots will be allocated in the following order:

2027 World Para Swimming Championships Allocation: 142 male and 128 female athletes*

MQS Slot Allocation: 178 male and 147 female athletes 

Bipartite Commission Invitation Allocation: Five male and five female athletes

*In the case that fewer slots are allocated through World Championships Allocation than available in the quota, WPS may allocate the remaining slots via the MQS Slot Allocation Method.
