IPC launches revised course on Classification Fundamentals

To support the implementation of the 2025 Classification Code, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has launched a refreshed series of online learning modules designed to provide a foundational understanding of classification - the cornerstone of Para sport.

The Classification Fundamentals course offers self-paced materials for anybody wishing to learn about classification within Para sport and was initially launched in October 2023 following feedback from IPC members for an introductory classification resource. Now, to align with the 2025 Classification Code which came into force for summer sports in January 2025 and July 2026 for winter sports, the learning modules have been redesigned and updated.

Each module consists of a series of related lessons that can be navigated freely, containing knowledge checks, a glossary of Code-defined terms, and key points that guide the learner in building their level of understanding. For the first time, the revised lessons also feature bespoke illustrations that accurately depict Para athletes in respect to their eligible impairments and sport classes to help improve the quality of examples and explanations included in the course.

To maximise its value, a certified version of the course has also been developed to further support IPC members and selected stakeholder groups.
 

Additional learning opportunities targeted towards groups across a variety of classification-related themes are being prepared to further support IPC members, athletes, classifiers and other key stakeholders.

However, we always knew better was possible, and with a certified version proving a popular request, we’re extremely happy to bring both to fruition.
