IWRF appoints Steve Griffiths as Chief Executive Officer

The International Wheelchair Rugby Federation (IWRF) is pleased to announce that it has appointed Steve Griffiths as its Chief Executive Officer. 

Griffiths has a long and diversified background that includes expertise in operational and strategic planning and implementation, human resource management, sport and development services, as well as excellent team and partnership building skills. He is also a globally recognised educator, and a Senior Visiting Fellow of the World Academy of Sport.

No stranger to wheelchair rugby, Griffiths played a major role in fostering the sport partnership between the IWRF and World Rugby back in 2010, where he was then Head of Organisation Development for World Rugby.

This partnership is still in place today, and Steve has remained active in assisting the IWRF in several areas, even after retiring from World Rugby in 2016, following 18 years of service.

“This is great news in terms of our organisation” stated IWRF President, Richard Allcroft.

“Having an individual with Steve’s calibre will shape the direction of the sport over the next several years. We have already shared ideas, and I know that he is looking forward to starting, in particular, evaluating and understanding the organisation fully. You will be hearing more from Steve over his first 100 days, as he gets to meet with the many people involved in our sport and the global Rugby Family.”

Griffiths followed up by saying, "It is a great honour and privilege to become CEO of the IWRF at an interesting time in the development of the sport. There will be significant challenges as I join at an unprecedented time with all sport being affected by the Covid-19 virus, including the postponement of the Paralympic Games for the safety of athletes and all involved.

“Having worked closely with the organisation in an advisory capacity since 2010, I am looking forward to join what I know is a great sporting family, and trust that I can contribute to delivering the goals set out in the 2019 - 2024 strategic plan.”
