Lima 2019 making good progress

The Americas Paralympic Committee’s (APC) and International Paralympic Committee’s (IPC) Co-ordination Commission for the Lima 2019 Parapan American Games has praised the progress made in the Peruvian capital following a series of meetings and visits.

The delegation, led by IPC’s Chief Executive Officer Xavier Gonzalez, visited several venues between 14 and 16 November. They included the Videna Complex where several sports will be contested, and the construction site of the Athletes’ Village in the district of El Salvador.

“I have seen significant progress in all areas since our last visit,” said Gonzalez. “We covered many topics in much more detail than in our previous visits. We are glad to see that the construction of the Athletes’ Village is underway.”

A team of accessibility experts led by Mexican architect Carlos Ramirez revised the venue construction projects together with APC Athletes' Representative Ileana Rodriguez, who provided observations both as an architect and Para athlete.

The Organising Committee, led by its President Carlos Neuhaus, presented reports in regards to sport, broadcasting, ceremonies, communications and marketing, Games services, legacy, medical services, protocol, security, technology, transportation and volunteers.

Gonzalez, Neuhaus and the President of the Paralympic Association of Peru Luisa Villar also visited the Congress of the Republic of Peru on 14 November. They attended a meeting of the Inclusion Commission chaired by Congressman Edwin Donayre.

“We have two more years to continue working hard and make sure that the Parapan American Games contribute to the change in the way people with an impairment are perceived in Peru. We want a real change both in the mindset and in the way of acting,” said Gonzalez after the meeting.

Carlos Neuhaus added: “The Parapan American Games will enable a total change. They will create many benefits for the country, including an accessible infrastructure legacy for the next generations.”

The Lima 2019 Parapan American Games will take place from 23 August-1 September, with a record 1,850 athletes competing in 17 sports, two more than at Toronto 2015.

Athletics, badminton, boccia, cycling, football 5-a-side, football 7-a-side, goalball, judo, powerlifting, shooting, sitting volleyball, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby and wheelchair tennis will make up the sporting programme.

Mexico City in 1999, Mar del Plata, Argentina, in 2003, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2007, and Guadalajara, Mexico, in 2011, staged the other four editions of the Parapan American Games.

Comisión Coordinadora destaca progreso hecho por Lima 2019

Una serie de reuniones y tours por las sedes se llevaron a cabo en la capital peruana con miras a los sextos Juegos Para Panamericanos

Comisión Coordinadora del Comité Paralímpico de las Américas (APC) y el Comité Paralímpico Internacional (IPC) para los Juegos Para Panamericanos Lima 2019 dejó satisfecha la capital peruana luego de una serie de reuniones y visitas entre el 14 y el 16 de noviembre.

La delegación, liderada por el CEO del IPC Xavier González, realizó diversas visitas a las distintas sedes, incluidos el Complejo Videna, donde varios deportes se llevarán a cabo, y la zona de construcción de la Villa de los Atletas en el distrito de El Salvador.

“He visto un progreso significativo en todas las áreas desde nuestra última visita”, dijo González. “Cubrimos muchos temas en mucho mayor detalle que en nuestras visitas anteriores. Estamos contentos de ver que la construcción de la Villa de los Atletas está en marcha”.

Un equipo de expertos en accesibilidad liderado por el arquitecto mexicano Carlos Ramírez revisó los proyectos de construcción de las sedes junto con la Representante de Atletas del APC Ileana Rodríguez, quien formuló sus observaciones en su carácter de arquitecta y Para atleta.

El Comité Organizador, liderado por su Presidente Carlos Neuhaus, presentó reportes sobre deporte, televisación, Ceremonias, comunicaciones y marketing, servicios de los Juegos, legado, servicios médicos, protocolo, seguridad, tecnología, transporte y voluntarios.

González, Neuhaus y la Presidente de la Asociación Paralímpica del Perú Luisa Villar también visitaron el Congreso de la República del Perú el 14 de noviembre. Allí asistieron a una reunión del Comité de Inclusión presidido por el congresista Edwin Donayre.

“Tenemos dos años más para continuar trabajando duro y asegurarnos de que los Juegos Para Panamericanos contribuyan a un cambio en la manera en que las personas con discapacidad son percibidas en Perú. Queremos un cambio real tanto en la mentalidad como en la forma de actuar”, dijo González luego de la reunión.

Neuhaus añadió: “Los Juegos Para Panamericanos permitirán un cambio total. Generarán muchos beneficios para el país, incluyendo un legado de infraestructura accesible para la próxima generación”.

Los Juegos Para Panamericanos Lima 2019 tendrán lugar entre el 23 de agosto y el 1° de septiembre, con un récord de 1.850 deportistas compitiendo en 17 deportes, dos más que en Toronto 2015.

Atletismo, bádminton, básquetbol sobre silla de ruedas, boccia, ciclismo, fútbol para ciegos, fútbol 7, goalball, judo, natación, powerlifting, rugby sobre silla de ruedas, taekwondo, tenis de mesa, tenis sobre silla de ruedas, tiro y vóleibol sentado compondrán el programa deportivo.

La Ciudad de México en 1999; Mar del Plata, Argentina, en 2003; Río de Janeiro, Brasil, en 2007; y Guadalajara, México, en 2011; albergaron las otras cuatro ediciones de los Juegos Para Panamericanos.
