Eight countries will do battle at the 2018 Men’s Central America and Caribbean Wheelchair Basketball Championship to be held 21-28 October in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua and Puerto Rico will compete not only for medals, but also for two available slots to the Lima 2019 Parapan American Games next August.

Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala and Nicaragua had already qualified after their top finishes in January’s Para Central American Games. Nicaragua held off El Salvador 60-44 to secure the gold medal earlier this year in front of their home crowd in Managua.

The teams are bidding to join Canada, defending Paralympic champions USA and hosts Peru at Lima 2019. An additional three teams will qualify for next year’s Parapans through the South America Championship to be held from 1-8 December, also in Lima.

International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF) Americas Competition Officer Steve Bach said: “Our congratulations to all of the teams participating in the 2018 Central America and Caribbean Championship. We wish you every success in your preparations for this important regional qualifier event.”
