Olympic City Stadium ready for the world’s best at Tashkent 2027
Everything you need to know about the home of next year’s World Para Athletics Championships in Uzbekistan 19 Jun 2026
In one year from now, the best of Para athletics will be competing at the Tashkent 2027 World Para Athletics Championships – marking the first time the event takes place in Central Asia.
Around 1,300 athletes from more than 100 nations are expected to compete from 19 to 27 June next year, in what will be the largest single Para sport event ever held in Uzbekistan. The final number of medal events is yet to be confirmed, but the programme will include at least 164 events aligned with the Paralympic Games programme.
The World Para Athletics Championships will take place at the Uzbekistan Olympic City Sport Stadium, a new 12,000 seat venue located in the Yashnobod district on the eastern side of Tashkent. The stadium is part of a wider sports complex known as Olimpiya shaharchasi (“Olympic city”), which also includes two indoor halls for team and combat sports, an aquatics centre and a velodrome.
Construction of the stadium began in November 2022, and the venue officially opened in August 2025
The Olympic City Stadium has a multi-functional design and includes a nine lane athletics track with a Mondo surface. The track holds a Class 1 Athletics Facility Certificate issued by World Athletics. The stadium is surrounded by stands divided into four sections – two along the straights and two on the curves. The main stand on the western side is the largest, featuring two tiers and VIP boxes. Two large LED screens are positioned on the curved ends, and the seating bowl is coloured in the tones of the Uzbek flag.
All stands are fully covered. The exterior is defined by a decorative facade of continuous horizontal slats, with the roof and facade forming a single light shell that wraps the building. A large portion of the roof is covered with a white membrane supported by metal columns.
The Olympic City Stadium will also be one of the venues of the 2029 Asian Youth Games. The surrounding complex is designed as a central hub for sport in Uzbekistan, bringing together multiple facilities within a single integrated site.
The stadium made its debut during the 2025 CAFA Nations Cup, hosting matches of the men’s national teams of the Central Asian Football Association. Uzbekistan defeated Iran 1–0 in the final to claim their first title in front of a passionate home crowd.
The venue has also hosted friendly matches for the Uzbek national football team as part of their preparations for their first FIFA World Cup appearance in 2026.
Uzbekistan has a strong Para athletics tradition. The sport accounts for 16 of the country’s 26 Paralympic gold medals since their debut at Athens 2004. At the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, Uzbekistan finished fifth in the Para athletics medal standings with 16 medals, including eight golds.
At the most recent World Championships in New Delhi 2025, the Uzbek delegation of 22 athletes secured 12 podium finishes and five gold medals. Brazil topped the medal table with 15 golds, followed by China (13) and Iran (nine).
