Tunis 2026 GP: Saptoyogo Purnomo and Pavlo Shabliy lead their nations to the top

Four days of thrilling action, highlighted by a world record and dominant performances from some of the sport's biggest Paralympic stars, marked the Tunis 2026 Grand Prix held at the Rades Athletics Stadium from 16-19 June.

Ukraine's Pavlo Shabliy stole the spotlight in male throwing events with two gold medals. He won the men's club throw F51 with an effort of 31.82m, who would have given him gold at last year’s World Para Athletics Championships in New Delhi.

The Ukrainian also took gold in the men's discus F51 with a throw of 14.16m, setting a new world record – the previous mark of 13.66m belonged to Algeria's Mohamed Berrahal set at the Tunis 2025 GP.

Who topped the medals?

Ukraine and Indonesia shone with 15 gold medals each – laced by dominance of several Paralympic stars – to be at the top of medals after the four days competitions.

Double gold medallist at Paris 2024, Ihor Tsvietov lived up to his billing winning the men's 100m T35 and men's 200m T35 – the same races in which he has a total of four Paralympic gold medals since Rio 2016. 

Among other top performers in men’s events, Tokyo 2020 champion Vladyslav Zahrebelnyi topped the podium in the men's long jump T37 (5.88m) while two-time Paralympic medallist Maksym Koval was strongest in men's shot put F20 with a throw of 17.01m.  

Two-time Paralympic gold medallist Anastasiia Moskalenko displayed incredible strength to throw the shot put to 7.03m and win the women’s shot put F32 - an event she won gold in Paris 2024.

Another Paris champion, Mariia Pomazan, also impressed with an effort of 12.40m, enough to win the women's shot put F35. 

On the track, reigning Paralympic champion Nataliia Kobzar dominated the women's 400m T37 race with a timing of 1:02.20, while fellow Paris 2024 gold medallist Yuliia Shuliar showed her class in the women's 400m T20 race winning it in 56.17s.

Tokyo 2020 gold medallist and four-time world champion Zoia Ovsii stayed ahead of the women's club throw combined class F51/32 field and won it with 22.96m throw. 

Impressive Indonesia

For Indonesia, their top athletes Saptoyogo Purnomo and Karisma Evi Tiarani, both silver medallist at Paris 2024, spearheaded the nation's charge with two gold medals each sending strong statements ahead of October’s Asian Para Games.

Purnomo, who won Indonesia's first medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympics, claimed the gold medal in the men's 100m T37 – an event he has two Paralympic medals – before adding the men's 200m T37 title racing in 23.88.

Meanwhile, two-time world champion Tiarani (T42) emerged the winner in the women's long jump T42 with an effort of 3.96m after claiming the women's 100m multiclass race in 14.51. 

Indonesia's remaining gold medals came from a new generation of athletes who have already made their mark at competitions such as the ASEAN Para Games an Asian Youth Para Games. Indonesia also went on to win the 4x400 Universal Relay race – one of the highlights of the Grand Prix. 

Home gold

As expected, the host nation, which fielded the largest contingent of 40 Para athletes (26 men and 14 women), finished inside the top three position in the medals table. 

Led by double gold medal performances from their Paralympic icon Raoua Tlili (women's discus throw and shot put F41), Tunisia ended with 25 medals that featured 10 gold. 

The eight-time Paralympic gold medallist delighted the home crowd by winning the women's shot put F41 with 9.50m, before producing another outstanding performance in the women's discus throw F41. Her winning throw of 35.61m comfortably surpassed Morocco's Hayat El Garaa, who recorded 27.57m. 

Another Paris 2024 medallist Raja Jebali reigned supreme in the women's shot put F40 with a throw of 8.68m.

On the track, five-time Paralympic champion Walid Ktila expectedly clinched the gold in the men’s 100m T34 racing (15.50). The world record holder had settled for the silver in the event in Paris 2024.  
Yassine Gharbi, the Rio 2016 bronze medallist, won the men's 400m T54 race in 48.88.

Other Paris 2024 stars

Among Africa’s other standout performers, Morocco's Aymane El Haddaoui clinched the men's 100m T47 gold racing in 10.74. He also lived up to the expectation in the men's 400m T47 race - an event he secured the gold medal in Paris 2024, finishing ahead of the field in 47.75.

Algeria's Paralympic star Nassima Saifi (F57) was also among the double gold medal winners triumphing in the women's discus throw and women's shot put.

Hosts of the next World Para Athletics Championships, Uzbekistan ended in fourth position with eight golds from their 29 medals. Paris 2024 gold medallist Kudratillokhon Marufkhujaev (F37) led the way for the Uzbeks, winning the men's discus throw (53.58m) and men's shot put (15.58m).    

Elsewhere, Portugal's Miguel Monteiro secured victory in the men's shot put F40 while USA's two-time silver medallist at Paris, Derek Loccident showcased his versatility by winning both the men's long jump and high jump events T64 events.

Following exciting Grand Prix stops in Africa and Europe, the World Para Athletics Grand Prix circuit now heads to Czechia for the second edition of the all-women's meeting in Olomouc from 2-4 July.
