BWF Para Badminton World Championships to take place in Brazil in February 2028

The Badminton World Federation (BWF) has announced that the Para Badminton World Championships will take place in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in February 2028. 

The championships, which will be held from 14-20 February 2028, will serve as a key event in the International BWF Para Badminton Tournament Calendar 2027-2028, leading up to the LA28 Paralympic Games

Confederacao Brazileira de Badminton (Badminton Brazil) was awarded the hosting rights following a competitive bidding process. It was selected for its strong technical proposal, proven hosting record as well as commitment to developing Para badminton across the Americas. 

 

 

First Para badminton World Championships in Brazil

The BWF Para Badminton World Championships 2028 will mark the first time the event takes place in Brazil, and will support the growth of the sport in the Pan American region. 

BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul said: “We are delighted to award the BWF Para Badminton World Championships 2028 to Brazil.

“This reflects the country’s growing strength in Para badminton and our commitment to expanding the sport globally.

“Positioned in the final phase of the Paralympic qualification period, just six months before the LA28 Paralympic Games, the championships will be a critical milestone for all players.

“It will provide a world-class platform for performance, preparation, and finalising readiness on the road to Los Angeles, while also reflecting our continued dedication to growing Para badminton in all regions.”

Badminton Brazil President José Roberto Santini Campos said: “The Brazilian Badminton Federation is absolutely thrilled with the selection of Brazil as the host nation for the BWF Para Badminton World Championships 2028.

“We are incredibly proud to welcome the world and are fully committed to working tirelessly to deliver a truly historic championship.”

 

BWF Para Badminton Tournament Calendar 2027-2028

BWF has also released the international Para badminton competition calendar for 2027 and early 2028

The calendar includes:

  • A structured series of Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3 tournaments, and Multi-Sport Continental Games/Continental Championships across the five continents.
  • Increased opportunities for World Ranking progression.
  • Carefully planned competition windows to support performance and qualification preparation.
  • Classification opportunities for 2027 will be announced in the coming weeks.
  • A key feature is its alignment with the LA28 Paralympics qualification pathway.

 

The ‘Race to Los Angeles Paralympic Ranking’ period will run from 5 April 2027 to 2 April 2028, during which athletes will earn ranking points to qualify for the Paralympic Games.

The LA28 Paralympic Ranking list published on 4 April 2028 will determine the initial list of qualifiers for the Para badminton competition. Para badminton will maintain a total quota of 120 places (60 men and 60 women), comprising 98 qualification places and 22 Bipartite Commission Invitation places allocated following the qualification period.
